| Brett Riggs
The Riggs family name has been prominent at South in both early and modern times. The tradition begins well before World War Two with Charlie Riggs, following through to Don and Ron in the 1960s, and then to the eighties and nineties with their sons - Darren and Scott, and Dale, Brett and Shane respectively.
Brothers Brett and Shane in particular were great A Grade players towards the end of the century. After contributing to the Reserves flag of 1983, middle brother Brett went down to Central Districts in 1984 determined to develop into a better footballer. With serious training, he soon established himself as an excellent key defender and onballer, selected for the South Australian Under 19s Teal Cup side in 1985.
In 1986 Brett returned to South as a senior, to become an outstanding club leader and cornerstone of the last GDFL premiership. In this year he was selected for South Australia Country and also finished second in the competition's best and fairest.
His resume includes the 1980 Most Constructive, 1981 Most Consistent and Runner Up Best and Fairest trophies in Junior Colts, 1983 Most Determined in the B Grade, along with the 1986 Runner Up Best and Fairest, 1987 Most Determined and 1988 Best Team Man trophies in the A Grade.
Riggs skippered the A Grade in 1988 and 1989 before his career was tragically cut short by a troublesome knee in 1990. However he was a member of the 1983 Reserves and the 1986 and 1990 A Grade premiership sides. Commonly referred to as just a good bloke, Brett - like his father, uncle, brothers and grandfather remains today as a genuine South icon.
