| Des Clark
The Clark brothers, Des, Dean and
Peter were all top A Grade footballers, but Des has
probably left the most lasting impression on the club.
Over a career spanning twenty years,
with sixteen seasons in the A Grade and four in the
Reserves, only Robert Argent has played more games
for the club. While conjecture about who have been
our greatest players of all time predominantly revolves
around the Eddies Mahoney and Schwerdt, Des Clark's
record suggests that maybe he was the best performer
over the longest period of time.
In 1954 Clark played in an A Grade
premiership in his debut senior year and would continue
to be an outstanding midfielder and later Captain-Coach
for South until 1970. Then from 1970 to 1974 he also
did a stint as Captain-Coach of the Reserves.
He was a member of
the 1954, 1960, 1967, 1969 and 1970 A Grade premierships
and finished his footy on a high note by leading
the Reserves to one more flag in 1974. 1969 in particular
was a remarkable year for him coaching the Reserves
to a premiership in the same year he excelled in
an A Grade flag.
Off the field Des was also a prominent
committee member during the late 60s and early 70s,
instrumental in the Redevelopment Committee of Riggs
Reserve and the inaugural Vice Presidents. He received
Life Membership in 1969 and was the first recipient
of the Club Person of the Year in 1976.
