Meanwhile, adverts went out for any boys or parents interested in South's Under 13 and Under 16 sides, to leave their names at Edmonds Newsagency. The S.G.F.C. Colts Football Club was formed. Herb Adams was to be its Chairman, his Secretary was C. Beckmann, K. Jones and M. Bartholomew made up the rest of the committee, with Stan Edmonds appointed as Coach
1961: A special meeting was held in the clubrooms in 14th Street. This was called to discuss the possibility of moving to a stronger league. The attendance was overwhelming and filled the club rooms. After a long and heated debate our Chairman, Herb Adams, put the motion to the members. As it is well known now the result was a tied vote. Due to the importance of the matter and because of the even split among members, the Chairman refused to give a casting vote and adjourned the meeting for two weeks pending a further meeting of the Gawler League.
Following that League meeting, the Chairman reported findings to our members at the reconvened Special Meeting and the vote was again put to the members. The result was an overwhelming majority in favour of moving to the Adelaide Plains Football League.
In hindsight (as was pointed out to Herb by a great club stalwart Joe Deuter) the Chairman "erred" in his decision not to cast his vote at the original special meeting; his duty being to vote in favour of the status quo. It is pointed out most emphatically that Herb's decision was due to lack of knowledge of the Rules of Debate and his refusal not to vote can in no way be interpreted as a way out of making a difficult decision. History would judge that "Popeye" Adams has never failed to face a difficult decision. Incidently, Herb remains adamant that had he cast his vote, rightly or wrongly, he would have voted in favour of the motion.
There were more additions to the "tin shed" and H.C. Adams, R.B. Gordon, and R.F. Martin were awarded Life Membership as a result.
and 1977 the original Directors were: - Herb Adams - Football (to be replaced by Bob Officer at a later date), Zenon Okunieff - Fund Raising, Roger Hutchins _ Affiliated Sports, Warren Isgar - Catering and Bar, Garry Hurst - Advertising, Publicity and Entertainment.
Herb Adams resigned from the position
of Chairman to take a position in Darwin and a farewell
was held in the Den for the Adams family. Popeye was
one of the greatest clubmen ever, and definitely in
this current period. His efforts were evident in many
areas around the Club, and the Lion (named after Herb)
mounted behind the bar is specifically to remind us
what being part of the South Gawler Football Club is
about.
