Peter Swift
Peter Swift was the first South son to excel as a league footballer, and our first State player. In 1903, South were often referred to as "the Blues". The blues certainly set in when we lost crack players Swift and his mate EH Cockram to South Adelaide. In those days, players were often reluctant to go down to the city to play league footy, because unless they moved to the city permananetly it actually cost them a lot more money to commute.
However it was a good move for Swift, as he was a gun forward who would eventually become the third player from Gawler to play for South Australia, judged best on ground for SA against Victoria. After being an integral member of the 1901 and 1902 back-to-back premiership side, it seems he was destined for greatness.
