| Robert Argent
Although sadly he passed away only a few years ago, Bob Argent is fondly remembered as a colouful character - a terrific club man who was a very entertaining spectator. His humorous barracking while standing alongside old teammate Rosco Shannon for many years is now the stuff of folklore.
What often escapes us however, is that 'Arge' was an outstanding footballer - a proven champion and our longest serving footballer ever. Indeed, he played more than four hundred games in a magnificent career, incredibly spanning nearly twenty years.
Awarded Life membership in 1965, Argent began in the Reserves in 1951 before promotion to the seniors in 1954. Unbelievably, he would play A Grade until 1967 and continue on as an assistant coach and Reserves stalwart right up to 1970. A powerful ruckman and key defender, he represented both the APFL and GDFL association sides.
Bob was a member of the 1951, 1969 and 1970 (as Vice Captain) Reserves premierships. He also played in the 1954, 1955, 1960, 1963 (as vice Captain) and 1967 A Grade flags. He was then a Goal Umpire from 1971 to 1994, and an active participant of the eightball club for most of his life.
Bob's sons Craig and Steven also played for South, Craig with some distinction. His wife June also was a loyal South person who put in a lot of work behind the scenes. Perhaps only Bob Officer and Des Clark come close to the remarkable record of Bob Argent.
