Walter Davies (Winky) Price

24/3/1886 to 29/7/1944

From the late 1890s through to World War One, the establishment of our great club and its immediate success was attributed to the prominence of football families in the ranks. For example, the May family, Bill, Bob and Louis Price, "Chum" and Bob Rau. "Winky" Price was one individual amongst these many family names who first went onto play league football with great success.

After coming up through the Gawler South Pirates seconds side, by 1904 Winky Price had established himself as a young star forward in the premierships of 1906 and 1907. He set a goal kicking record in the GFA in 1906 with his eleven goals against new club North Gawler and took out the J.J. Byrnes Goalkicking Trophy for the GFA that year. In 1906 Price also represented the GFA against Norwood, and then captained the GFA against South Adelaide.

Winky was noticed by then giant West Adelaide and was invited down to the city to play league in 1907. He had evolved into an awesome player and in the following season proudly captained West Adelaide to an SANFL premiership in 1908.

Price returned home to South in 1909 a more seasoned campaigner and led us to hat-trick of premierships in 1909, 1910 and 1911. He also captained the GFA against the Barossa and Light in 1910. In those days he was virtually the senior coach.

In 1912 Winky was awarded the Mail Medal for the fairest and most brilliant player in the Association.1913 was a year of innovation in that boundary umpires were first appointed, to make the game flow more and go faster. In his final season this year, Winky Price captained the A Grade one last time to finish minor premiers, however ultimately we missed out on the premiership.

An interesting postscript to the profile of Winky Price is that in 1969 the relatives of this obviously brilliant player from the pre World War One era presented some of his medals back to the Club. The awards included his 1912 Mail Medal and his 1908 West Adelaide Premiership Medal. Today, these medals proudly hang in our foyer's trophy cabinet.

A great player, captain, coach and mentor, Winky Price was one of our first league superstars.
