| Xavier (Zac) Sibenaler
Perhaps South's greatest ruckman ever and the epitome of one hundred percent determination is the legendary Zac Sibenaler. His prominence at the club spans both on and off field roles and his record at both South and representing the GDFL between 1969 and 1979 speaks for itself. Vice Captain of the A Grade in 1975 and 1979, Zac also coached the Reserves to a flag in 1984.
A natural athlete of Belgian heritage, Zac took to footy easily, debuting immediately in the A Grade of 1968 - when he won the Best First Year award, before starring in the A Grade Premierships of 1969, 1970, 1974, and then in 1979 as Vice Captain. In 1970, Zac won the A Grade Mail Medal, the Mobilco trophy plus the Hamiltons Menswear Kentish Suit award supplied to the Association for the season. After recovering from a season interrupting injury, the B Grade were also fortunate to have Sibenaler help them to a premiership in 1972.
His trophy list boasts the A Grade Best and Fairest in 1973, and Runner Up in 1970, 1971, and 1977. He was also honoured with A Grade trophies for Most Determined n 1969, Most Consistent in 1974, Most Determined in 1975, Best Team Man in 1976, and Most Constructive in 1979.
Along with promionent roles in the affiliate sports of basketball and eightball, Zac took up the office of Administrative Director of the club between 1989 and 1991, Financial Director in 2003 and 2004 and since 2006 has been a dedicated Patron.
However, this Life Member is probably most proud of his sons Yves and Andrew, who grew up at the club. Andrew became a fine A Grade footballer before pursuing a career as a pilot, while his youngest son Yves has established himeself as a premier tall defender with Central District at league level. Yves junior was the centre half back of SANFL premierships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, as well as the Bulldogs' reserves flag of 2002.
So the Sibenaler name is today synonomous with the Lions. Five very tall and very strong brothers with French accents who never mind a beer. Zac's brothers Yves, Guy, Francis and Peter were all fine footballers who reached A Grade level. Yves senior in particular went onto play league for the Bulldogs and during the 1970s was as dominating a player in the GDFL as Zac.
