Alan (Alby) Obst
Following in the footsteps of Sam Butler, Alan Obst is South's most reent success story. A member of the 2001 Junior Colts premiership, and equal runner-up in the 2002 Junior Colts Beat and Fairest, Alby first went down to Elizabeth Oval to try out as a competitive tall defender or key forward in 2003.
Obst represented South Australia at the 2005 national Under 18 championships. He then played 16 serviceable games in the SANFL reserves for Central District in 2005 before becoming Adelaide's fourth pick (number 48 overall) at the 2005 AFL national draft.
Although recently delisted from the Crows' rookie list, hopefully a big future looms before this popular young man. But perhaps the most pleasing thing about Alby's profile however, is that when asked in the AFC magazine "The Pride" about what he would be doing at 40, he replied "probably still be playing for South Gawler". That's the spirit...
Well, we'd love to have him back some day - but meanwhile, he can make us proud by achieving his potential as an AFL footballer.
